Outdoor learning is not simply about taking children outside. It is about understanding the unique pedagogy of the outdoors. The Outdoors Thinking approach helps practitioners recognise what the outdoor environment offers that indoors cannot: space to move, real materials, changing weather, sensory richness, open-ended resources, living things, curiosity, uncertainty, challenge and deep play.

This award is not about needing expensive equipment or picture-perfect outdoor spaces. It is about using the space you already have with greater confidence, intention and understanding.

For children, this means more time to explore, wonder, move, collaborate, investigate and follow their own fascinations.

For staff, it means developing the confidence, skills and professional understanding to make outdoor play and learning work well every day.

For settings, it means creating outdoor provision that is richer, more purposeful, more sustainable and alive with possibility.

Written and created by Professor Jan White, winner of the Nursery World Trainer of the Year Award 2025, the Outdoors Thinking Award brings the depth of the face-to-face Certificate in Outdoor Practice into a facilitated online format.

The Award comprises three courses each delivered over a term. Participants will meet on line for two hours every fortnight. On the alternate weeks buddy pairs will meet online to discuss relevant research and impact in setting.

September cohort for course 1 is now open to book.
